Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. has allocated $562,500 to support the launch of a Drone First Responder (DFR) Program for the San Bernardino Police Department. This funding will cover 75% of the program’s total cost and represents a significant step forward in enhancing the department’s emergency response capabilities.

The funds will be used to purchase Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones), docking stations, cloud software, and related equipment. It will also support staff training, FAA certification, and ongoing maintenance of the program.

“This technology is a game-changer,” said Chief Darren Goodman of the San Bernardino Police Department. “Drones can arrive on scene faster than officers, providing real-time information that helps us assess threats, locate individuals in need, and deploy resources more effectively. We’re grateful to Supervisor Baca for providing funding for this critical program.”

Drone First Responder Programs have proven successful in cities across the country by reducing response times, supporting search and rescue operations, and improving officer and community safety. The DFR program in San Bernardino is expected to enhance public safety by providing live aerial video and situational awareness before officers even arrive on scene.

“This investment is about using smart, innovative tools to support our officers and protect our neighborhoods,” said Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. “We’re proud to bring this level of technology to San Bernardino—because our community deserves the best in public safety.”

The remaining 25% of the program’s cost—approximately $187,500—will be funded through the City’s Citizens’ Option for Public Safety (COPS) allocation.
