RIVERSIDE, CA- The Mt. Rubidoux SDA Church presents, “Unite the Night – Retro Edition.” This event is set to take place on Saturday, January 27. The last social was amazing, so the team wants to make this one EVEN BIGGER AND BETTER! The event is going to be a chance for the church family to have fun with their pastoral staff and other churches, and it is an opportunity to invite the community. The special guest for this event is POLY HIGH SCHOOL.

Today, in our crazy world it may feel like there is a DISCONNECT between generations. This event is embracing the theme of different generations coming together and enjoying a night of fun. The PAST AND PRESENT will be represented! Come dressed in your favorite generational attire.  There will be food, refreshments, and games! This event is FREE for everyone, of all ages.  If you missed the last one, you surely don’t want to miss this one!  We hope to see you there!!

The San Bernardino City Unified School District Board of Education honored 12 students with an Outstanding Student Award at the December 5, 2017, Board meeting. The San Bernardino Symphony also recognized students by providing them and their families with free symphony tickets.

Outstanding Student Award winners are recognized for achievement in academics, athletics, fine arts, or citizenship or for showing significant improvement in these areas. Students are encouraged to have hope for the future by thinking about their long-term educational and career goals.

Holcomb Elementary School Outstanding Students

First-grader Kaylen Capetillo is a model student. She is always on task and excels in all academic subjects. She is caring and an empathetic helper in class. Kaylen would like to become a teacher.

Sixth-grader Angel Escobar is a school ambassador who always sets a great example for how to behave appropriately. Angel is successful academically and enjoys playing the violin. Angel would like to attend college and study to be an architect.

Sixth-grader Lilly Gomez is an avid reader and shows a strong thirst for knowledge. She is always up for a challenge, and shows all the traits of an International Baccalaureate learner. Lilly wants to become a geologist someday.

Kendall Elementary School Outstanding Students

Fourth-grader Tyler Franzen is an outstanding student. He excels in all subjects, is a role model for good behavior, and has good attendance. His favorite subject is reading because he says it takes him to another world. Tyler wants to become a kindergarten teacher.

Fourth-grader Tiana Pham is a role model at Kendall. She excels in all subjects and treats others with respect. She loves school, which may explain her perfect attendance record since kindergarten. Tiana wants to become a pediatrician.

Fifth-grader Leah Montero is an exceptional student. She has perfect attendance and excels in both reading and math. She is also a student leader and role model. Leah wants to be the valedictorian of her high school and then attend Harvard or Princeton.

North Verdemont Elementary School Outstanding Students

Fifth-grader Celeste Davila is a scholar and a role model for her peers. She is hard working, kind, and well behaved. She has goals and she isn’t afraid to put in the hard work to reach them. Celeste would like to attend UCLA and study veterinarian medicine.

Sixth-grader Sophia Marquez is respected by her classmates because she is honest and fair. She is an excellent reader and a talented musician. She was selected to play the violin for last year’s honor orchestra. Sophia would like to attend UCLA and become a nurse or an author.

Fourth-grader Michael Moffit is a valuable member of the school community. He is respectful, insightful, and willing to help others. He has great reading comprehension and math skills. Michael plans to attend college and become a video game developer.

Paakuma’ K–8 School Outstanding Students

Sixth-grader Julia Mendez is a top-notch student who is excited about school and learning. She takes pride in her work and is always ready to be challenged. Julia looks forward to attending Cal State San Bernardino and becoming a teacher.

Eighth-grader Wendy Perez is known for her academic excellence and her athletic interests. She is focused on her education, and that inspires her classmates to do the same. Wendy wants to attend college and earn a nursing degree while playing professional volleyball.

Kindergartener Matthew Smith is an amazing role model. He is respectful, responsible, and has lots of school spirit. He works hard and is always willing to help his classmates. Matthew wants to become a chef and open his own cooking school.

RIVERSIDE, CA- The Riverside Black History Parade and Expo has been a popular annual tradition for 39 years. This cultural event, held annually on the 2nd Saturday of February, will take place Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 10 a.m. in downtown Riverside. This year’s theme, “It Takes Village — Celebrating Community Leadership”, salutes local community heroes.

This year the committee is excited to announce the newest edition to this year’s festivities. Special celebrity guest appearance by internationally-acclaimed Hip Hop entertainer, “Tommy the Clown“. Tommy the Clown has become a world-renown entertaining sensation and innovator of a dance style known as “Clowning” and “Krumping,” which has become a worldwide phenomenon. 

Tommy the Clown and his dance entourage have traveled all over the world including London, Japan, Germany and Hong Kong. He has also performed for the likes of Madonna, Pamela Anderson and Cedric the Entertainer to name a few. In 2005, Tommy the Clown landed a starring role in Lions Gate Films release of ‘RIZE’, directed by David LaChapelle.

The Riverside Black History Parade & Expo is also proud to have Dr. Judy White, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools as this year’s Grand Marshall. Dr. White has worked as a classified educator, teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, deputy superintendent in San Bernardino City Schools and Superintendent of Moreno Valley Unified School District. The community affectionally refers to her as a “history maker and stereotype breaker” because of the numerous recognitions and accomplishments she has made. Some of these include: Moreno Valley 2014 Citizen of the Year, Riverside Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, 2016 Community Member of the Year, NAACP 2015 Educator of the Year and many more. She is the current ACSA Region 19 Superintendent of the Year and CAAASA 2017 Superintendent of the Year.

The 39^th Annual Riverside Black History Parade & Expo creates a sense of cohesiveness within the community, bringing people together from all walks of life and various cultural backgrounds to celebrate with pride Black History through food, music and fun-filled family activities, attracting thousands of attendees annually.

The parade route begins at Riverside City College at the corner of Terracin and Magnolia Avenue, ending on Main Street in front of the Riverside County Courthouse in downtown Riverside. The procession will include government and city officials, local high school drill teams, vintage cars and various other parade vehicles. Parade-goers will cheer along the parade route on Market Street, as well as in front of the Historic Riverside County Courthouse where parade participants will be announced from the main parade stage as they proceed past.

SAN BERNARDINO, CA-  Young Women’s Empowerment Foundation honored the Social Lites, Inc. for 61 years of service to the Inland Empire in empowering and mentoring youth for a better future through the annual Beautillion program and performing community service at the Young Women’s Empowerment Foundation scholarship fashion show held on Friday, January 5 at the Shandin Hills Golf Club in San Bernardino.

A.K. Smiley Public Library’s free World War I film series continues with a screening of the silent classic Wings at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 20, at the First Congregational Church of Redlands located at 2 W. Olive Street. As an added treat, the screening will include Bob Salisbury live on the organ!

Directed by a veteran WWI combat pilot, Wings tells the story of David Armstrong and Jack Powell as they enlist in the American Air Service, and Mary Preston who joins the war effort as an ambulance driver in France. Renowned for its realistic flying sequences, the film was the first to be awarded the Academy Award for Outstanding Picture, the only fully silent film to receive that accolade. Wings stars film legend Clara Bow, Buddy Rogers and Richard Arden.

RIVERSIDE, CA- The Mt. Rubidoux SDA Church presents, “STOP Trafficking, START Acting,” a place to learn more about the devastating issue of human trafficking and how you can help to stop it. This event is set to take place on Thursday, January 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Mt. Rubidoux SDA Church located at 5320 Victoria Avenue in Riverside.

Every day, in small towns and big cities, and in countries around the world, women and girls (especially) are being trafficked into a horrible life of sexual slavery. It is also happening in our backyard, right here in the county of Riverside. Come and join us to learn more about the heartbreaking horror of human trafficking, and what you can do to assist in stopping it. For this event, the following organizations have partnered: Soroptimist International of Corona, Riverside, and San Bernardino, Operation SafeHouse, The Grove Community Church and Mt. Rubidoux SDA Church. In addition, several anti-human trafficking organizations will be represented.

The event is FREE and open to the public for individuals 12 years old and over. Adults must accompany children. Donations of $10 will be accepted and greatly appreciated. Light refreshments will be served.

SAN BERNARDINO, CA-  Members of the Social Lites, Inc. were among 500 guests at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast held on Monday, January 15, at California State University, San Bernardino.  Those that were in attendance included the community, community leaders, and youth who took their time to perform community service and celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The keynote speaker Dr. Michael Andrew Owens, Senior Pastor at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in San Bernardino message to “Dream On” inspired attendees!

Beautillion Knights performed community service on their day off by helping the Inland Empire Concerned African American Churches (IECAAC) organizers Ms. Beverly Wright and President of IECAAC, Dr. Regional Woods, Senior Pastor at Life Changing Ministries of San Bernardino (former Beautillion Sir Knight) set-up, escorting guests to their seats, serving guests who had mobility issues and other acts of kindness. 

April 4, 1968 marks the 50th anniversary of King’s assassination.  Let us not forget at the time of King’s premature death King was fighting for issues concerning economic inequality, employment, full citizenship, and access to safe and affordable housing. The school is scheduled to have a public hearing on Tuesday, February 6 at 5 p.m. All are welcomed to attend this event at the San Bernardino Board of Education Office located at 777 N. F Street in San Bernardino.

Savant Prep will provide a unique educational opportunity for children that will focus on financial literacy and entrepreneurship. If approved, the school is prepared to implement the ‘Your Financial Future’ curriculum developed by Bank of America to teach students skills such as credit, money management, budgeting and philanthropy.

Savant is scheduled to open its doors on August 6, 2018 to students in transitional kindergarten to second grade. The school will offer full-day transitional kindergarten and kindergarten programs, tutoring and intervention for students who struggle to meet grade level standards, and accelerated support for students who consistently perform at mastery. Savant is dedicated to making sure that all students experience academic success and are prepared to become the future leaders of our city.

This public hearing will provide the founders of Savant with a platform to expound on their charter petition and demonstrate that they have community support for the school. If you believe in Savant’s mission to provide students with a foundation that will enable them to become financially literate and seek opportunities for entrepreneurial innovation, please come out on February 6 to help Savant Prep get approved by the SBCUSD Board.
