Q&A with Dr. Shalonda “Sunshine” Crawford

1. What motivated you to enroll in Covered California, and what were you looking for in a plan?

When I transitioned into private practice, I no longer had employer-sponsored insurance, but I still needed a plan that offered the level of quality and choice I was accustomed to. As a professional and entrepreneur, I wanted options that supported my family’s health needs and aligned with the standards we expected. Covered California provided access to reputable plans and gave me the flexibility to choose coverage that fit both my lifestyle and my responsibilities, including access to mental health care, which is essential in both my personal life and my work as a psychotherapist.

2. What was your experience comparing plans and choosing coverage?

I completed my application online and also spoke with a representative who helped walk me through the different plan options. Comparing plans showed me what benefits mattered most for my family and reassured me that Covered California offers high-quality choices, including plans similar to those provided by employers. It was empowering to make a well-informed decision about coverage that truly fits our needs, especially knowing that mental health services such as counseling, therapy, and behavioral health care are included as core benefits across all plans.

3. How has your coverage supported your family’s health needs?

My family and I rely on our coverage for routine checkups, free preventive visits, and everyday health concerns. Having dependable coverage means I don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment when something comes up, whether for myself or my children. Knowing we can access the care we need gives us stability and allows us to stay focused on our work, our health, and our commitments to the community.

4. Why is coverage especially important for entrepreneurs and self-employed professionals?

As entrepreneurs, we manage many responsibilities — and our health is one area we cannot afford to overlook. Without employer-sponsored benefits, having reliable coverage becomes essential. It provides consistency, supports our ability to work, and ensures we have access to care when we need it. Maintaining coverage is a key part of sustaining our families, our businesses, and our overall well-being. During Open Enrollment, it’s especially important for people to review their options. Enrolling by December 31 ensures coverage begins January 1.

5. What would you say to someone hesitant about enrolling in Covered California?

I would encourage them to take the time to explore their options at www.coveredca.com or call them at (800) 300-1506. They also have more than 14,000 agents and community-based organizations throughout the state that can help.

Many people are unaware of the variety and quality of plans available or assume Covered California isn’t for people like them. But comparing plans can be eye-opening — you can find coverage that fits your needs, your expectations, and your lifestyle. Covered California allows you to confidently choose a plan that supports your health and your future.

The First Ladies Health Initiative wants to remind you that Covered California is a free service that helps you explore your options to find a plan that meets your needs and every Covered California plan provides free preventive care, including annual checkups and screenings, mental health and substance abuse services, and free children’s dental insurance.
