London McBride Appointed to the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission

LOS ANGELES, CA— The Board of Supervisors has appointed London McBride to the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission. He will assume the seat vacated in March 2025 by former Commissioner Sean Kennedy.

“My work is grounded in the belief that every person deserves dignity, voice, and the chance to thrive,” Commissioner McBride said. “I look forward to being a part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure constitutional policing by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.”

Commissioner McBride’s career spans more than 25 years in law enforcement and community engagement, faculty roles in higher education, pastoral leadership, and service on multiple equity and human relations committees.

A human-centered educator, mentor, and leader, Commissioner McBride is committed to helping people and communities grow through justice, compassion, and trauma-informed practice. His work focuses on the intersection of education, community engagement, equity leadership, and holistic safety.

“Commissioner McBride will bring unique expertise and insight to the Commission, which already includes highly accomplished individuals from the law enforcement, legal, academic, advocacy, technology, social work, and other fields,” Commission Chair Hans Johnson said.

“Commissioner McBride has spent decades training officers, college students, healthcare workers, and organizational leaders in procedural justice, bias awareness, de-escalation, and community-centered safety,” Chair Johnson added. “His experience is invaluable as the Commission strives to improve how the Sheriff’s Department interacts with diverse communities across LA County.”

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Commission consists of nine civilian LA County residents who are appointed by the Board and serve the Commission in a volunteer capacity.

Five Commissioners – Hans JohnsonJamon HicksPatricia GiggansJames P. Harris, and George Newhouse – were nominated by the Supervisors from their respective districts. The other four Commissioners – Arthur Calloway IIIrma CooperLuis S. Garcia and, now, London McBride – were appointed to at-large positions at the recommendation of the Board’s Executive Officer, in consultation with the Commission and County Counsel.
