SEIU 2015, Local Faith Leaders Demand County to Take Back Their $0 Offer and Support a Livable Wage for IHSS Caregivers

(EMPIRE NEWS NETWORK (ENN)—- SAN BERNARDINO, CA—- Earlier this month, home care workers of the In-Home Supportive Services program (IHSS) represented by SEIU Local 2015, clergy, and community leaders united for a prayer service and action at the Board of Supervisors office in appreciation and recognition of caregivers who are fighting for a contract that offers a livable wage.

County leaders offered a $0 wage increase to the county’s IHSS caregivers after months of negotiations and delivering over 13,000 petitions of support from community members.

“Caregiving is hard work,” said Pastor Harold Hines. “It isn’t easy to fully dedicate your time and energy to someone who depends on you to survive, and in San Bernardino County we are blessed to have over 26,000 people who are willing to step up to the plate and be caregivers to our community’s seniors and people with disabilities. We are thankful for them and the work they do. They deserve more than minimum wage.”

The event started with an invocation at St. Bernadine’s Church and ended with an action outside of the Board of Supervisors building.

Afterward, clergy leaders, caregivers and their care recipients walked up to the Board of Supervisors office and demanded the county create a pathway out of poverty for the county’s IHSS caregivers.

The next bargaining session between IHSS caregivers and the county will be December 12, 2018.

PAL Sees A Need, PAL Meets A Need

(EMPIRE NEWS NETWORK (ENN)—-SAN BERNARDINIO, CA— Provisional Accelerated Learning Center hosted their 4th Annual Pals of PAL Community Feast. The local community was invited to participate in an event that was established out of a desire to meet community needs.

The Pals of PAL Community Feast has attracted many families, friends, and individuals from all backgrounds throughout the community.  Each year this event aims to provide hope and joy for those who may have fallen on hard times.

PAL Center, an established non-profit organization for over thirty-two years was founded by Dr. Mildred Henry who saw a need to provide students and the community with a quality education. Birthed from her legacy, the PAL Charter Academy was established over 20 year ago and was designed to provide “Education with an Individualized Approach.” Her successor Dwaine Radden Sr., Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the PAL Center & Charter Academy saw a need to provide a “Feast” style luncheon for the Community and students for the Thanksgiving Holiday.  PAL as also has hosted community gatherings, and food drives to support the needs of the community.

Radden said, “This event and other PAL outreach program has filled a huge void in the community. We believe in taking a holistic approach when it comes to addressing community and PAL students’ needs. There’s nothing greater than breaking bread and fellowshipping with the community, staff and students. We have been blessed with an incredible Board, Staff and Student Body here at the PAL Center and PAL Academy. They love giving back to the community!

Mr. Brantley is one heck of a cook. He is the true catalyst behind our Community Feast and I salute him for his efforts and generosity.”

Students, teachers, and administrators shared good food, laughter, and music with their community and helped those in need. A display board at the entrance of the PAL Community Center was covered with statements from students that read what they themselves were thankful for, providing inspiration to those who attended the luncheon. A PAL Middle School student wrote,

“I’m thankful for my mom because she works hard to provide for me”. “I’m thankful for the food that is placed on the table”, another student writes.

About 80 people from the community were served a spread of delicious foods. Students who volunteered served their community members while doing so with thanksgiving in their hearts. Smiles filled the room as the families ate and laughed as they shared stories with one another.

Director of Special Projects, Nicole Mitchell, said “If we aren’t here to serve then why are we here? We are meant to serve and help meet the needs of others. I’m thankful to see the smiles on the faces of our community here on our campus. I hope our acts of kindness will create a ripple effect in our community. I believe our actions are seeds planted that can grow and change hearts around our community for the better!”

Every Tuesday at 2 PM the PAL Center offers a Community Food Bank Program, which serves approximately 100+ community members. All students, staff, and parents are invited to be of service.

“I Tell You… If You Ain’t Got Your War Clothes On…!

By Lou Coleman-Yeboah

(EMPIRE NEWS NETWORK (ENN)— … You best put them on.  Because the devil, as a roaring lion is going about this world seeking whom he may devour. His mission is to kill, steal, and to destroy.  He doesn’t care who you are or where you come from. He doesn’t care where you’ve been or where you hope to be going. His motive is to disrupt and to dismantle any and all associations that you may have with God. Just like He did Job, the Devil is confronting God about you. His intent is to make you a lie.

If you are a Christian, you are in a fierce war. In fact, you’re in a life and death battle for your faith. Satan is determined to shipwreck and destroy the faith of all of God’s elect. And the stronger your faith, the greater will be his attack against it. Why? Because, unshakable faith in the Lord causes Hell to rage. Nothing poses a greater threat to Satan’s kingdom than a Christian who is unmovable in faith. By faith, righteousness is born and demonic fires are quenched. By faith, God’s promises are obtained and the mouths of lions are shut.

Your adversary has studied you and has coordinated a plan of attack. And his scheme is so widespread that if he cannot destroy you, he’ll aim his attacks towards the people closes to you and the interests that are near and dear to your heart.  Therefore, you have to fight not just for yourself, but spiritual warfare involves praying the devil off of your kids, praying him away from your spouse, taking authority over the devil on your job, defeating the enemy that’s trying to take your mind. I tell you, “This Means War!” If you ain’t got your war clothes on you best put them on!

I don’t know about you, but I ain’t going out like this.  I ain’t going out without a fight! I’m going to keep the devil where he belongs – under my feet.  We are no longer under Satan’s power, but are empowered by God Almighty to defeat the devil when he comes against us!  It is high time we learn that we have power and authority, through Jesus Christ, to walk in victory over the enemy. Jesus gave us that power, and as long as we humble ourselves before God, and submit ourselves to Him, the enemy cannot defeat us. We can keep the devil in his place, right where God put him: under our feet. It’s up to us to put the devil on the run by using our authority, standing firm in our faith, and thanking God for what He has wrought for us.

I tell you, the next time the devil tries to get in your way or block your path, lift your feet high, stomp loud, and let everyone know you are coming through town. The sound of the stomping and pounding of your feet is the signal to let everyone know they need to get out of your way.  If the enemy is stupid enough to challenge you and tries to hinder your plans, just keep walking! If the devil tries to stop you, just raise your feet high, pound down as hard as you can, and stomp all over him as you march forward. Crush and bruise him beyond recognition!”

However, it is important to point out that this smashing and crushing of Satan must be done in cooperation with God. Alone you are no match for this archenemy. That’s the reason Paul says, “…The God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet….” In other words, this is a joint partnership between you and God. By yourself, you could never keep Satan subdued. But with God as your Partner, the devil has no chance of ever slipping out from under your heel! [Romans 16:20]

Never forget – the only place that rightfully belongs to the devil is the small space of ground right under your feet! Jesus accomplished a total, complete, and perfect work through the Cross of Calvary and His resurrection from the dead. The victory is already yours… FIGHT! Don’t allow the enemy to ruin you or anyone else that you know. Your family is worth fighting for. Your health is worth fighting for. Your peace of mind is worth fighting for. If you have to roll up your sleeves and go hand to hand, fight for it. Because if one can put a thousand to flight and two can put ten thousand to flight, then sooner or later, everything around you will be covered by the power of God!

Declaring War on the Devil!  Are there any believers left who are indignant at the assault of the enemy? Where are the redeemed who are still proud of their God and still mad at the devil?  We are called and equipped to be soldiers of Christ. God has given us everything we need to win; he has assured us of victory, and those who overcome shall reign with Jesus forever. Therefore arise, fight, and never give up!

HOLIDAY REMINDER! The San Bernardino Police Department reminds you to celebrate the holiday season responsible

(EMPIRE NEWS NETWORK (ENN)—- SAN BERNARDINO, CA—With the holiday season fast approaching, the San Bernardino Police Department wants to remind everyone to be responsible and not drive after drinking or take drugs that affect your ability to operate a vehicle.

To help keep our roadways safe the San Bernardino Police Department will be conducting saturation patrols and DUI checkpoints beginning Nov. 23. The enforcement efforts coincide with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving campaign, which runs from November 23 to December 12.

“The holidays are a time to enjoy the company of family and friends, but also a time to be extra careful on the roads,” said Police Sergeant Harvey. “Sadly, the holiday season leads to an increase in drivers who shouldn’t be driving. It’s important for us to let people know that if you feel different, you drive different.”

During the 2017 Thanksgiving (Nov. 22-26) and Christmas (Dec. 22-25) holidays, 99 people were killed and nearly 4,500 people were injured on California roads. Of those deadly crashes, nearly 35 percent involved alcohol.

With holiday parties taking place, it’s important to plan ahead and make sure everyone has a sober ride home. Even if you’ve had only one drink, play it safe and designate a sober driver or use a ride-share service to get home. If you plan on drinking, don’t plan on driving.

The San Bernardino Police Department also supports efforts by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to inform drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.

“Don’t spoil the holiday and put yourself and others at risk by driving impaired,” Police Sergeant Harvey. “People need to understand that the only time they should be driving is when they are sober.”

Starbucks and Aspiranet Holiday Wish Drive for Foster Kids

Generous families pick up a tag, buy the gift on the tag and return it, unwrapped, to the same Starbucks location. Aspiranet “Elves” distribute the gifts prior to the holidays. Throughout the Holiday Wish Drive, some Starbucks locations will be participating in gift wrapping parties.
