Queen Latifah

CULVER CITY, CA –- Sony Pictures Television is proud to announce an All-Star line-up for the debut of The Queen Latifah Show, the new multi-topic, daytime talk-variety show hosted by global entertainment icon, Queen Latifah, premiering Monday, September 16. Among the celebrity guests who will appear during the first week of the show are Oscar-nominee and Golden Globe-winner, John Travolta; Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy Award-Winner, Jamie Foxx; Oscar nominee and Golden Globe-winner, Sharon Stone; Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal and Oscar & Golden Globe nominated actor, Grammy Award-winning musician and executive producer of The Queen Latifah Show, Will Smith.

“Today is a reminder that it is our duty to honor and pay tribute to all those we lost and whose lives were forever changed on this day just 12 years ago. Our thoughts and prayers will always be with the families and loved ones of the nearly 3,000 people that perished in the appalling acts of terrorism on 9/11. During one of our nation’s darkest moments, we also witnessed countless acts of heroism, bravery and human kindness as the nation worked to recover and rebuild. Since then, thousands of Americans have also sacrificed their lives fighting terrorism and maintaining our cherished freedoms at home and abroad. To all of them, we are forever grateful for their sacrifice.

            Today, I call upon all Californians to pay tribute to all these American heroes, by learning more about disaster preparedness and taking steps to be ready for all emergencies. Retreat 2013

SAN BERNARDINO, CA- On Saturday, September 7, the California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB) and Student African American Sisterhood (SAAS) chapters convened their second annual retreat for incoming and continuing students. SAAS and SAAB are a part of national organizations which offer an evidenced based model for student retention and success. This year the retreat opened with Chief Jimmie Brown and remarks from Dr. Mildred Henry, Professor Emeritus, who shared her story, facts about African American History and called for students to persist and succeed in college and beyond. During breakout sessions, students, faculty and staff facilitated workshops which allowed students to explore the meanings of sisterhood and brotherhood, understand campus data, discuss “who we are”, and prepare to be successful students at CSUSB. This event kicked off a year of powerful programming that will be facilitated collaboratively by students, faculty and staff. In addition, SAAS and SAAB also plan to be more visible on campus and in the community as the school year goes on by engaging in community service and serving as accountability partners to their peers to ensure that as their sister ad brother’s keeper they shall and will rise together.

AA Family Reunion 6

MORENO VALLEY, CA- Over five hundred Moreno Valley residents and approximately 50 vendors attended the First Annual African American Family Reunion event in Celebration Park hosted by the African American Caucus, Region 13.  The purpose of the event was to impact, educate and empower the community with available resources.  The NAACP, Tuskegee Airmen, Riverside Mental Health, Salvation Army, Riverside County Sheriff Department and many other vendors encouraged the community to get out and vote, and participate in education and legislative events.  State Senator Richard Roth opened the event with praises for the group’s leaders who spear headed the day’s events and reminded everyone that it was also the week we celebrate the 50^th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. Speech, “I have a Dream.”  61^st District Assemblyman Jose Medina was on hand to greet the participants and also thanked all constituents for coming out.  Jesus Holguin spoke to the group on the outstanding 2012 school year the district had experienced and Dr. Fleming praised the school district for the over 3 million dollars in scholarships that was received by the 2012 senior class.  She also identified the district as an International Baccalaureate (IB) district and spoke to the community regarding the Dual Immersion language program.  The California Democratic Party African American Caucus Chair, Darren Parker, also attended the event.  It was a day full of food, family and fun for all ages.

WAG Retreat

SAN BERNARDINO, CA- Since 1972, the Westside Action Group (WAG) has been advancing the dream week by week. A group of men on the West side of San Bernardino came together in 1972 and formed the Black Father’s organization to work together to advocate for youth in the community.  This event was the forerunner of WAG. WAG is a proactive organization for African Americans in San Bernardino County in general, but its primary focus is within the city of San Bernardino.

As part of WAG’s recognition of the 50th anniversary March on Washington, they sponsored a two-day retreat to develop a unified community action plan. The participants agreed on a set of goals that will be put into action through four committees. The committees are Economics and Community Development, Education, Health and Leadership and Professional Development. Community members or organizations that would like to participate in the ongoing development and implementation of the action plan are invited to attend the weekly meetings held each Monday at 12 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino, 1180 W 9th Street, San Bernardino, CA 92411.

LA Million Father March Committee

FONTANA, CA- The 2013 Inland Empire Million Father March will be held once again on Saturday, September 7 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Seville Park, 16601 Seville Ave., Fontana, CA, 92334. The purpose of the event is to provide fathers with useful, obtainable and effective resources that will be used in the support and education of their children. There will be several topics presented at the event which range from Financial Planning, Education, Child Safety, Fathers with Daughters, Mental Health, Co-Parenting, College/Trade School and many more. This is a free community event supported by Fontana Mayor Aquanetta Warren and the City of Fontana. In addition to resources provided to the fathers, there will also be spoken word presentations by foster youth, golf demonstrations, entertainment, giveaways and a cookout. Last year’s Inland Empire Million Father March was hosted by Bishop Lacey Sykes Jr., and Cross Word Christian Church in Moreno Valley. SB Police

SAN BERNARDINO, CA- The San Bernardino Police Department will host a Community Police Academy for San Bernardino City residents every Wednesday from September 4 to October 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Classes will be held at the San Bernardino Police Department Main Station located at 710 N. “D” Street, San Bernardino, CA 92401. Academy classes will cover a variety of topics including narcotics enforcement, criminal investigations, code enforcement, the canine program, pan handling, gang enforcement, SWAT and traffic enforcement. Participants will meet members of their police department, learn police department works and how to partner with police to make the community better. The academy is free, but space is limited. Tools for Success

BLOOMINGTON, CA- Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown (D-San Bernardino) in partnership with the San Bernardino County Library, the National Investment Division of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NID) Housing Counseling Agency, Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP), Westech College and the Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County hosted the 1^st Annual Tools for Success Day, a back to school celebration with giveaways, entertainment, food and gifts on Saturday, August 17 at Ayala Park in Bloomington and Saturday, August 24 at the Baker Family Learning Center in Muscoy. Between both events, nearly 250 students were provided a backpack stuffed with pencils, pens, notebook paper, coloring books, activity books, colored pencils or crayons, back to school haircut coupons, stickers, a ruler, a cookbook and literature.

During the event, special remarks were given by Assemblymember Cheryl Brown, San Bernardino County Librarian Leonard Hernández, San Bernardino County Superintendent Gary Thomas and Executive Director Linda Jackson, NID Housing Agency.  Assemblymember Brown shared information about California’s Legislature implementing the local control funding formula. This initiative allows our school districts to control the money that comes from the state and use it to close the achievement gap in our struggling schools at the local level.

Assemblymember Brown encouraged parents to be proactive and engage their children’s school principals, teachers and counselors to ensure that funding is being used to meet the educational needs of their children. The 1^st Annual Tools for Success Day also featured free health screenings, financial literacy information, financial assistance services for homeowners and other valuable educational resources for classroom success.

FONTANA, CA-  A group of girls from Hunters Point Family organization based in San Francisco made a visit to KRESTMORE Farms in Fontana where they helped Sis. Nova with weeding in the farm. Hunters Point Family organization has an entity called Girls 2000, a safe haven where girls give and receive support as they overcome the complex challenged they face in becoming self-filled individuals, future leaders and role models in their community. Through project-based learning and opportunities to exercise leadership, girls gain the knowledge, skills and self-confidence required to participate fully in their own empowerment process. GIRLS 2000 develops and leads activities based on the HPF philosophy that our youth can transform their current reality if they are given opportunities to gain awareness of their capabilities, develop the courage and ability to make life-affirming decisions, and have access to necessary resources and support. Yolanda Holder

CORONA, CA- Imagine walking 521 miles in a 15 day period. You’re engulfed by extreme heat, sweat pours down your brow, and with every step your feet throb like a heartbeat. This will soon be the reality for Yolanda Holder, Guinness World Record holder for most marathons run in a year. Yolanda has experienced many hardships to get to the top, but nothing could prepare her for the loss of both parents to type 2 diabetes. When her mother passed September 2,2012, Holder vowed to do her part to prevent diabetes from taking another loved one. Despite being grief stricken, she took to action and ‘Extreme Walk 4 Diabetes’ was born.  On August 19th, she will embark on an amazing journey across California, starting in Corona, at Corona Nissan and finishing in Oakland, at the American Diabetes Association office, on the anniversary of her mother Annette Norton’s passing. Her mission is to promote the benefits of walking 30 minutes a day and encourage people of all ages to get out and get fit while having fun! Holder hopes to raise over $5,000 when she crosses the finish line in Oakland. She is also encouraging her fans, and supporters to join her as she passes through their cities.
