Eight Schools Earn Platinum Award, More Than Double Last Year’s Numbers
SAN BERNARDINO, CA — San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) is celebrating 68 sites that earned a California Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) Implementation Award, including 8 that earned Platinum Awards.
“PBIS is just one of the tools we use to help make sure SBCUSD SHINES, especially our goal of making sure our schools are safe, secure and welcoming for scholars and staff,” said SBCUSD Superintendent Mauricio Arellano. “These state-level PBIS Implementation Awards demonstrate the progress our campuses are making towards our goals for every student.”
PBIS is a nationally recognized, three-tiered program that equips students with the social skills to respond to situations in a safe, responsible and respectful manner. Staff members teach and model good behavior and provide positive corrections and use restorative justice practices when needed.
Tier 1 is aimed at stopping behavior problems before they start through schoolwide procedures and activities. Tier 2 provides targeted support for small groups of students who need additional guidance. Tier 3 provides individual support for students who need intensive intervention. Based on this evaluation, schools in California may earn bronze, silver, gold or platinum recognition.
“We are honored to have earned Platinum PBIS status,” Anton Principal Melanie McGrath said. “Our team has worked hard to implement research-based systems, such as conflict mediation, counseling and small group interventions. These PBIS systems cultivate a positive culture that enables students to thrive.
Platinum schools must prove that they are effectively implementing all three PBIS tiers and meet data requirements, including that no more than 20% of students receive two or more major referrals. The eight SBCUSD schools that earned the illustrious Platinum PBIS Implementation Award are:

Together, we’ve built a positive culture where every scholar can thrive, and this recognition shows that the Curtis Way is the right way.”
