SAN BERNARDINO, CA — Three elementary schools in San Bernardino County have been named AVID National Demonstration Schools by the AVID Center. The three sites were among 16 schools recognized nationwide.

Congratulations to:

  • Curtis Elementary School, Rialto Unified School District
  • Levi H. Dickey Elementary School, Chino Valley Unified School District
  • Moreno Elementary School, Ontario-Montclair School District

“We are incredibly proud that our county is home to three AVID National Demonstration Schools,” said County Superintendent Ted Alejandre. “With three of our sites recognized among just 16 nationwide, and only 10 in California, this distinction reflects the deep commitment our schools have to the AVID program and demonstrates the meaningful, positive impact this program continues to have for our students.”

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Demonstration School campuses are model sites that exemplify high-quality, schoolwide implementation of AVID Elementary systems and strategies. Each designated school has demonstrated consistent, intentional use of AVID practices that support college and career readiness for all students. Demonstration Schools meet rigorous eligibility and validation criteria, including sustained implementation of the WICOR® strategies (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) across all grade levels and content areas. Instruction is purposeful and student-centered, with evidence of structured notetaking, academic language development, and student engagement in rigorous thinking.

A Demonstration School also shows strong alignment between leadership, staff, and systems. This includes ongoing professional learning, collaborative planning structures, and schoolwide commitment to equity and access. Teachers consistently use AVID instructional practices, and students demonstrate ownership of their learning through organizational tools, goal setting, and reflection.

Each of the newly recognized Demonstration Schools will host educators from across the region and nation, offering a firsthand look at what AVID success looks like when the practices are embedded into the culture, instruction and expectations of the entire school community. Visitors will also be able to observe classrooms, engage with student ambassadors, and leave with practical skills to elevate their own programs.

To hold their designation as an AVID Demonstration School, each recognized site must submit for revalidation every three years.
